LASER Smart Home Video Doorbell Review
Over these past few months I have been covering a lot more smart home tech than I used to and I am really enjoying it so far. And today I have another smart home review for you, this time it’s the LASER Smart Home Video Doorbell which is part of LASER’s smart home tech lineup. The amount of devices connected to my network is getting unreal…
Big thanks to LASER for sending this out for review!
What’s in the Box? Design and FeaturesIn the silver section is where the main doorbell button is. Surrounded by an LED indicator ring that lights up when the doorbell senses motion but also when the doorbell is pressed. This ring also lights different colours during setup to help you with the setup process.
Above from this is the speaker, this is where your voice will come out when you are talking through the app. But this is also where the doorbell will make a chime sound when the button is clicked to let the person know that the doorbell has been pressed. It’s a nice little touch.
Now to the camera, this is the main reason people buy smart doorbells. Being able to see what’s happening on your property when you aren’t home is great. The camera will record a clip every time motion is detected as well as when the doorbell is pressed. These are saved onto the MicroSD if you choose to put one in.
LASER Smart Home Video Doorbell Mounting SystemThe mounting system for the LASER Smart Video Doorbell is also really good. It’s really easy to install with only 4 screws and allows for wiring up a traditional doorbell transformer if you had already had a doorbell. This will both charge the smart doorbell but also use the old chime instead of the wireless one. Once you slide the doorbell onto the mounting bracket, you can use a little screw from the bottom to make sure no one runs off with your doorbell. It’s a nice little extra bit of security.
Wireless ChimeThis is the little chime that comes with the LASER Smart Video doorbell, it’s really easy to set it up. Just plug it into a powerpoint and away you go. On the side of the chime are the volume buttons and chime sound buttons to let you change the chime sound. But for some reason, no matter how much I tried I couldn’t get it to change from the standard Ding-Dong sound. There is also a little LED light on the chime to give you a visual sign that the bell is being rung.
Features- Live view on-demand and instant alerts via smartphone
- Built-in microphone and speakers
- 720p HD image resolution
- Works on every home – with or without an existing doorbell
The live view and instant alerts are hands down the best feature of the LASER Smart Video Doorbell. When the doorbell detects motion, It will automatically send a notification to your phone telling you that there is motion detected at your door. Clicking this notification will take you directly to the app to view the live feed and check the recordings.
Having a built-in microphone and speaker is awesome. I have security cameras around my house but not all of them offer two way audio. So having a way to talk to people at my door, ie couriers is great so that I can make sure that something being delivered is left in the right spot when I’m not home.
The only features I think it’s really missing are Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration.
Specs App for Android and IOSOn the quick start guide for the LASER Smart Video Doorbell it says to use the SmartLife app. But when I downloaded it and connected the doorbell to it it said that it wasn’t compatible with it and that I needed to download the CloudviewerX app. So I’m not sure whether LASER hasn’t updated their app compatibility or whether the manual is wrong but I’d say I’m not the first person to encounter this issue.
Once you have the app downloaded, setting up the doorbell is a breeze. Just go to the plus symbol and and go through the steps to add your WiFi and to let the camera see the setup QR code. Once you do this, you’re ready to go! From the app you can do things like check recordings, see live video, take a photo and even speak to someone at your door. The app is quite easy to use and all the doorbells abilities are right there in front of you.
Performance
For a 720p camera, it does a really good job at showing you what is going on in your front yard. It’s really easy to see the faces of the people at the door both during the night and day. I was actually really quite surprised at the night vision quality of the doorbell, but it’s actually really good. You can really easily see anyone that might be lurking around the door and capture their movements in real time.
In terms of motion detecting. I tried walking in and out of the door at different times of the day and it seems that in the morning when the sun is facing right into the front of the house it doesn’t pick up motion as well but it’s still pretty accurate.
The battery life on the LASER Smart Video Doorbell is actually really good, I’ve had the doorbell for about a month now and have only had to charge it once!
Pricing
The LASER Smart Home Video Doorbell retails online for about $130 AUD.
Conclusion
Is the LASER Smart Video Doorbell for you? Well that depends on what you want. If you just want to get notifications that someone is at your door and be able to talk to them. Yes, this is perfect for you. It’s really easy to set up and get going and doesn’t need any extra usage fees for recording and is overall a really great starting point for those who want a smart doorbell. But if you want some extra features like 1080p video and Alexa integration I would recommend picking up one of the Ring Video Doorbell Gen 2’s for only an extra $20.
The LASER Smart Home Video Doorbell is available from the LASER online webstore. But is currently out of stock at the time of writing (24/07/20(
